Reactive Technologies appoints Volker Beckers as new chairman

December 11, 2014

Reactive Technologies, a leading UK-based smart grid and demand-side management (DSM) company, has appointed Volker Beckers as its new chairman.

On Monday, Reactive Technologies announced that Dr Heikki Huomo would be stepping down as chairman to pursue private and family interests due to ill health.

Beckers brings with him a wealth of senior level experience from within the energy industry. His main responsibilities will include overseeing the performance and decision making of the board of directors and providing leadership and strategic support to Reactive Technologies’ senior management team.
As former Group CEO of RWE npower for three years, Beckers’ valuable insight gained from one of the UK’s ‘Big Six’ utility companies will strengthen Reactive Technologies’ position as a leading provider of next-generation DSM services.

Marc Borrett, CEO and co-founder of Reactive Technologies commented: “The energy sector requires innovation and thought leadership if it is to tackle the UK’s impending energy trilemma. Volker’s previous appointments, his outspoken views on out-going fossil fuel-powered energy systems and his genuine desire to promote the benefits of community green energy and distributed power projects fits perfectly with what we are trying to achieve at Reactive Technologies.

“Volker joins Reactive Technologies at an exciting time in our company’s history. We anticipate strong growth in the coming 18 months as demand side management proves its value to energy consumers while playing an increasingly important role in balancing the supply and demand of electricity in the UK.”
Dr Ian Mays, Group Chief Executive of RES, a leading investor in Reactive Technologies, commented: “Volker brings considerable experience of driving innovation on a large scale to Reactive Technologies’ board.  This experience can now help to drive the hugely important role that demand side management must take in future secure, low carbon, electricity systems.”

Newly-appointed chairman of Reactive Technologies, Volker Beckers added: “Simply continuing to raise energy prices to meet the growing demand for electricity in the UK and help pay for new infrastructure is not working. This approach is having a detrimental effect on the reputation of many of our leading energy suppliers and something has to change.

Reactive’s unique approach to help balance the supply and demand of electricity can ensure the lights stay well and truly on despite warnings of shrinking capacity margins this winter. Demand side response services, such as those offered by Reactive, not only support a distributed energy economy, but also help reduce CO2 emissions, maintain affordable energy prices and provide security of supply.”

Beckers continued: “The energy industry has a great opportunity to adopt a different approach in an environment where their core business models are facing challenges. Demand-side management is really starting to gain momentum in the UK as successful trials yield clear benefits for major energy users such as supermarkets, hotels, campuses and office buildings. Managing the time-of-use of millions of individual electrical assets across large multi-occupancy sites in order to reduce energy demand is challenging. Reactive Technologies’ has overcome this challenge with its next-generation DSM capabilities and I’m delighted to be a part of what could be one of the most significant innovations to the energy market in decades.”

Having graduated from the University of Cologne with a degree in Economics, Volker Beckers has more than two decades experience in the European energy industry. He is currently a non-executive director for Elexon and HM Revenue & Customs, Chairman for the Advisory Board Centre Future Energy Business at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam and a member of London’s King’s College advisory board at the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS).
At the 2012 Energy Awards in London, Volker was presented with the Outstanding Contribution Award.
He is married with 2 children.
